1. Reflection on Parenting Styles

To become a better parent is to become a better person.  Reflecting on how we were parented can indeed provide insights into our own parenting styles. While we may be influenced by our upbringing, we are not destined to repeat the same patterns. Awareness of our own experiences allows us to consciously choose how we want to parent our own children. We can draw on positive aspects of our upbringing while also recognizing and addressing any negative patterns or behaviors.

2. Nurturing Sibling Relationships

Building strong relationships between siblings involves fostering communication, empathy, and mutual respect. One way of doing that is to always have siblings on the same page.  Have the kids gang up on the parents that they are boring, annoying and rule following, as a way of bonding for the siblings.

3. Impact of Social Media on Parenting

Social media can have both positive and negative effects on parenting. Current research shows that very young children don’t learn well from screens. You must develop a healthy relationship with your phone.  A recent study found that kids who habitually check social media had changes in parts of their brain that control social rewards and punishment.  Habitual social media checking impacts the amygdala, one of the emotional centers of the brain that makes us feel and react to fear.

4. Being a "B.A.D." Mom and Importance of Meditation

Be a "B.A.D." Mom- (“Breathe, Assess, and Deal”)is what we must do as parents. Breathing plays a crucial role in achieving this balance by helping moms cultivate self-awareness, manage stress, and respond to challenges with intention rather than reacting impulsively. Assess the situation so that you will respond in an appropriate way.  Dealing with the situation so that you are responding in a way that is appropriate to the context of the event.

5. Incorporating Various Parenting Philosophies

Dr. Pressman’s book integrates insights from various parenting experts and philosophies to offer a comprehensive approach to modern parenting. By referencing experts like Lisa Damour, Carol Dweck, Marc Weisbluth, and Jennifer Wallace, among others, Dr. Pressman acknowledges the wealth of knowledge available and distills key principles that align with the overarching theme of embracing imperfect parenting. It recognizes that there's no one-size-fits-all approach to parenting and encourages parents to find what works best for their family while embracing the inevitable imperfections.

6. Five Principles of Parenting

Relationships - the presence of a nurturing relationship with at least one supportive, stable adult

Reflection - the space for mindfulness and micro-meditation in the times between the busy moments

Regulation- Staying intentional without letting emotions spiral unnecessarily into flight or flight mode.

Rules - Creating boundaries and limits to help your children feel safe.

Repair - The spontaneous and intentional processes you can use to mend your relationships

7. Teaching Inner Efficacy

Rather than emphasizing perfection, Dr. Pressman encourages the idea that effort leads to growth and evolution. Teaching children inner efficacy involves helping them focus on aspects within their control, such as their attitude, effort, and response to challenges. By fostering a growth mindset and emphasizing the importance of resilience, children can learn to navigate obstacles and setbacks with confidence and determination.

8. Influential Person

Dr. Pressman was greatly influenced by her paternal grandfather Papa Jack, and his amazing resilience.  He is currently 99 years young! Dr. Pressman’s paternal grandparents are both Holocaust survivors.  Papa Jack still works tirelessly to tell these stories and make sure this important story is not forgotten. We are all charged with the privilege of raising good humans, and this is a part of it.

9. Need for Connection

Connection is essential for caregivers as it provides a sense of belonging, validation, and emotional support. Intellectual connection and conversation stimulate growth and learning, while finding an identity beyond the role of "Mom" fosters personal fulfillment and self-discovery.  Suite Escape emphasizes the importance of carving out time for oneself and nurturing meaningful connections with others to maintain a sense of individuality and well-being amidst the demands of parenting.

10. Raising "Good" Humans

Raising "good" humans involves instilling values such as empathy, kindness, and resilience in children. It's about nurturing their social, emotional, and moral development to become compassionate and responsible members of society. Identifying personal values is crucial in practicing the five "R"s (relationship, reflection, regulation, rules, repair), as it provides a foundation for making deliberate parenting choices aligned with one's beliefs and goals. Ultimately, the goal is not to raise flawless individuals but to cultivate individuals who can navigate life's challenges with integrity and grace.
