The story begins in 1978 in Kabul, Afghanistan with Sitara Zamain, the daughter of a prominent family. A horrible crime ensues and Sitara is smuggled out of Afghanistan and raised by an American diplomat to become a renowned surgeon. Thirty years later, Sitara's world is upturned by an elderly Afghan patient leading her on a journey of shadowy memories through a world she loved and lost.
